Staff News Throughout the Transport Industry

HONG KONG - After recently announcing a host of changes to the senior managing team of Cathay Pacific, the airline has taken the first step in its transformation plan, a reorganisation of its head office and the restructuring of its cargo department. Cathay Pacific has removed the role of Cargo Director which was due to be fulfilled by James Ginns, who would have been taking over the position from Simon Large, effective June 1.

Uber has, at last, announced the full launch of Uber Freight - the company's latest move to extend its on-demand transportation model from taxis and people to, well, everything else.

The company has already branched out to food delivery via UberEats and local delivery via UberRush, and had initially soft-launched its freight arm back in September 2016 in and around the Dallas area.

With the official launch of Uber Freight, an app that matches trucking companies with loads to haul, Uber is looking to transform the world of freight transport much as it has changed the world of taxis with its ride-sharing app.

After years of other companies trying to offer what are often nicknamed 'Uber for trucking' freight-matching services, Uber itself is launching a load-matching app it says will make 'logistics and transportation as magical as pressing a button and getting a taxi,' according to Eric Berdinis, product lead for Uber Freight.

SAN FRANCISCO - Now that Uber has thoroughly disrupted the taxi industry, changing transportation as we know it, the ride-hailing startup has its eyes on a something much bigger - massive, 18-wheeler semi trucks.

Doft is a new app, available for iOS and Android devices, addressed to truckers to find work. The company considers itself as the number one service in the freight transportation industry to find cargo through an app, connecting transportation companies and truckers in just a few minutes. The app is available throughout the United States, but the big part of drivers and users of the app are based in the state of California.

On its Google listing, doft.com calls itself 'The First Real Uber for Trucks.'

They're about a dozen startups too late for that claim. App-based services for drivers have been rolling out for three years now fueled by tech investors. They all bill themselves as Ubers for trucking.

Doft is even late calling itself the 'real' Uber for trucking because Uber Freight, the real, 'real' Uber for trucking, is already signing up drivers at its website, freight.uber.com.

If your space is only occupied by early-stage startups and bigger players are staying away, it might not be as hot as you think.

No one likes waiting in line at a restaurant, watching other people get seated as the smells of freshly cooked food waft past. But while waiting your turn sucks, especially when you're hungry, a crowded space is often a positive sign. It means you have chosen a spot that lots of other people seem to find appealing.
