GREECE - A sad start to our weekly roundup of staff changes in the freight and logistics sector with the death of Greek ship owner, civil engineer, and media mogul Aristides Alafouzos, who has died at the age of 93. In 1964, Alafouzos pursued a career in the shipping industry, eventually creating a sizable fleet of tramp ships and bulk carriers. In the early 1970s he founded Glafki Maritime, then over a decade later founded Kyklades Maritime. Sons Giannis and Themistocles Alafouzos head the family's shipping and media interests, respectively.
UK - The British International Freight Association (BIFA) has appointed Pawel Jazra as Policy and Compliance Advisor, with responsibility for issues concerning Customs. Jarza started his career in the industry 12 years ago when he joined Yamato Transport Europe. After that he moved to Arcadia and Landmark Global UK, gaining experience in a traditional forwarding environment, as well as specialising in e-commerce logistics.
This role will involve working with the trade, HMRC and other bodies to ensure customs processes and policies represent the best solutions for both trade and regulators particularly as new routines and solutions emerge during the negotiations and preparations for the UK to leave the European Union.
In his new position at BIFA, he will be working alongside Robert Windsor, Executive Director and Mike Jones, Policy & Compliance Advisor (air matters) in BIFA's Policy & Compliance Department. He will also become a member of BIFA's Customs Policy Group.
UK - The Baltic Exchange has appointed Janet Sykes, former Head of Communications at Clarksons Platou, to the role of Chief Commerical Officer, effective July 3.
UK - 3t Logistics has announced Chris Dixon as Operations Director.
AUSTRIA - Walter Holzhammer has been named Port Representative for Austria and Hungary for the Belgian Port of Antwerp. He is based in Weiden am See, Austria.
CHINA - Express delivery firm ZTO has announced Hongqun Hu as Chief Operating Officer, effective immediately.
US - The US Senate has confirmed Jeffrey Rosen as Deputy Secretary of the Department of Transportation (DOT). Rosen has extensive experience in the transportation sector, serving previously as General Counsel at both the Department of Transportation and the Office of Management and Budget.
US - Do Freight Transportation (DOFT) has announced David Gee to its team. DOFT connects trucks and shippers together in a similar vein as ridesharing apps like Uber and Lyft.
US - Morrison Express has announced Ron Krajniak as its new Vice President and General Manager, Americas Region.
US - AutoNation has announced the resignation of William Berman as President and Chief Operating Office, effective immediately. He will continue to serve as an employee in an advisory capacity through June 30. Mike Jackson, the company's Chairman and CEO will assume all operating responsibilities in the interim.
Additionally, the company announced the promotion of Senior Vice President Scott Arnold, to Executive Vice President of Customer Care and Brand Extensions.
CANADA - US - Ovation Logistics has announced St'phane Gang' as its new Chief Executive Officer.
CANADA - US - Away from the usual staff changes, the Maritime Association Port of New York and New Jersey has inducted 5 individuals to its International Maritime Hall of Fame. Harley Franco, Chairman and CEO of Harley Marine Services; Angeliki Frangou, Chairman and CEO of Navios Maritime Holdings Inc.; James McKenna, President and CEO of Pacific Maritime Association; Jean-Jacques Ruest, Executive Vice-president and Chief Marketing Officer at Canadian National Railway; and Madeleine Paquin, President and CEO of Logistec.
