Why Rates Are High But Loads Are Scarce: The Capacity Paradox Explained

The contradiction feels real: spot rates are climbing, contract rates are at 52-week highs, and yet the loads feel harder to find. If freight is so expensive, shouldn't there be tons of it? The answer lies in a market that has fundamentally shifted—and understanding that shift is critical to your bottom line right now.

The Capacity Crunch Is Real, But It's Not About Trucks

There are still plenty of trucks on the road. What's changed is where they are and what they're carrying. Shippers facing higher freight costs are consolidating loads, using larger trailers more efficiently, and holding inventory longer to avoid peak-season rates. Meanwhile, many owner-operators and small fleets have simply parked units or reduced their active fleet because fuel costs and insurance premiums have squeezed margins so tight that running empty isn't worth it.

The result: fewer trucks competing for fewer loads, but the loads that do move command premium rates because shippers have no choice. It's a tight market, not a full one.

Why High Rates Don't Equal High Volume

Freight volume—the actual tonnage moving through the economy—has been soft for months. Retailers are cautious about inventory ahead of the holidays. Manufacturing is uneven. Construction activity varies by region. Meanwhile, the loads that are available tend to be concentrated: reefer freight, fuel hauling (especially with the recent HOS waiver), and specialized commodities that pay well but don't come through every day.

General freight, the bread-and-butter of most owner-operators, is thinner. When you scroll a loadboard and see high posted rates, remember that those are often outliers—the loads that need to move fast or on tight lanes. The average available load may not match that headline rate.

The Rejection Trap

Tight capacity has a hidden cost: rejection rates are up significantly. Shippers and brokers are more selective about which carriers they book because they know they have fewer options. If your authority score, safety record, or equipment type doesn't match, you won't see the load at all. If you turn down a marginal load hoping for better, the next one might not come for hours.

This is where loadboards like Doft make a real difference. Instant matching and real-time visibility mean less time hunting and more time picking the right loads. But even with perfect tools, the market reality is: there are fewer good loads per day than six months ago, even though rates are higher.

How to Win in a High-Rate, Low-Volume Market

Specialize where you can. Reefer, flatbed, hazmat, and fuel hauling all have tighter capacity and steadier demand. If you can pivot your equipment or certification, the volume and consistency often make up for the learning curve.

Lock in contract work. Spot rates are high, but they're volatile. A solid contract—even at rates 5–10% below current spot peaks—gives you predictable volume and miles. That consistency is worth more than chasing daily spikes.

Reduce your deadhead. High rates only matter if you're actually running loaded. Focus on lanes and brokers that consistently offer backhauls or return loads. Every empty mile costs you.

Track your real margin. High rates mean nothing if diesel is eating them. Know your break-even on every load type and lane. Use that to reject loads that look good on the board but won't pencil out after fuel, tolls, and maintenance.

The Outlook

This market condition—high rates, low volume, tight capacity—is likely to persist through Q4 and into early 2027. Shippers are adapting to expensive freight by being smarter, not by shipping more. Owner-operators who adapt too—by specializing, contracting, and being disciplined about load selection—will do well. Those chasing every high-posted rate and running empty between loads will struggle.

The paradox is real, but it's not a puzzle. It's a market that rewards precision and penalizes desperation. Stay sharp on your numbers, know your lanes, and don't mistake high rates for high opportunity. The real money is in consistency and margin, not in headline numbers.
