Motus Registration System: What Owner-Ops Need to Know Before July

Owner-operator checking registration status on phone in truck cab at sunset

The FMCSA's Motus registration system launched in May 2026 as part of a major crackdown on fraudulent carriers and chameleon operations. If you're an owner-operator leasing to a carrier or operating under your own authority, you need to understand what Motus is, why it matters, and what compliance looks like. Confusion here can cost you loads, fines, or worse—unwitting involvement in a carrier fraud scheme.

What Is Motus and Why It Exists

Motus is a centralized, digital registration system designed to verify carrier identity and weed out operators running under fake or shell company identities. Before Motus, bad actors could register multiple fraudulent carrier entities, evade enforcement, and disappear after defrauding owner-operators or shippers. Motus ties registration to verified business identity, ownership, and compliance history—making it much harder to hide.

The system was launched as part of the Trump administration's $217 million investment in trucking safety enforcement and workforce development. It replaces older, paper-based registration processes with real-time verification that brokers, shippers, and load platforms can check instantly.

How Motus Affects Owner-Operators

If you lease to a carrier, Motus protects you: you can now verify that your carrier is legitimate before signing on. If you operate under your own authority, you had to register in Motus by the May 14, 2026 deadline. If you haven't already, you're technically out of compliance—and brokers and shippers are increasingly checking Motus status before booking.

Motus also means your carrier (or your own operation) is now part of a searchable database. Brokers and platforms like Doft can cross-reference your registration status, safety record, and compliance history in seconds. A clean Motus profile builds trust; a delayed or incomplete one signals red flags.

What Owner-Ops Must Do Now

If you missed the May deadline, register immediately. You'll need:

  • Your EIN (Employer Identification Number) or Social Security Number (if sole proprietor)
  • Proof of authority (MC number or USDOT number)
  • Business address and ownership information
  • Any previous carrier names or DBAs

The registration is free and takes 10–15 minutes online. Go to the FMCSA's official Motus portal (fmcsa.dot.gov) and follow the prompts. Do not use third-party sites claiming to "speed up" registration—they're often scams.

Once registered, your status will show as active within 24–48 hours. Brokers and shippers will see you as verified. If you've changed your business structure, address, or ownership in the last 18 months, update your Motus profile now—mismatches can trigger audits.

Red Flags to Avoid

Don't lease to a carrier that hasn't registered in Motus or claims their registration is "pending." If a broker or shipper can't verify a carrier through Motus, walk away. This is no longer a gray area—it's a compliance requirement.

Similarly, if you operate under your own authority, don't ignore Motus updates. The FMCSA will periodically cross-check Motus records against safety audits, accident reports, and enforcement actions. Keeping your profile current keeps you off the radar for random audits.

Moving Forward

Motus is now the baseline for carrier legitimacy in the U.S. trucking market. Shippers and brokers are using it to vet partners, and owner-operators should too. On platforms like Doft, you can now see which carriers are Motus-verified in real time—one more layer of protection when you're choosing who to work with.

The system isn't perfect, but it's a significant step toward cleaning up the industry. If you haven't registered or updated your profile yet, do it this week. Compliance is quick, and it directly affects your ability to book loads and your credibility with brokers.
