Dump Truck Safety Tips To Prevent You From Looking Like An Idiot

Dump Truck Safety Tips To Prevent You From Looking Like An Idiot

Like most heavy-equipment jobs, dump trucking can be very dangerous if not performed correctly. Don't believe me? Type "dump truck accidents" into a search engine and look at the results. It doesn't take much to see how damaging these accidents can be.

Dump trucks keep getting bigger, which means tipping accidents are more likely to occur. Combine that with the everyday hazards of the job and the number of accidents these drivers encounter is suddenly not so shocking.

This is a quick reminder for every operator of some basic safety rules and regulations. It doesn't matter how long you've been operating one or how many loads you claim to have dumped in your career. It's always worth reviewing these to prevent injuring yourself or someone else on duty.

Dump truck safety rules

  • Always, and I mean always, dump on a level surface. Don't use the tired excuse that you've "dumped on way worse surfaces before."
  • Never overload the upper portion of the box.
  • Check your tire pressure every day before operating. Uneven tires can cause instability, which leads to tipping accidents.
  • Always wear proper safety gear on the job site. Shoes, gloves, glasses, and a hard hat are a must.
  • Never dump when parked next to another vehicle. A domino effect is no joke and can be extremely dangerous.
  • When backing up, keep your speed very slow, no faster than walking speed, and always have someone to guide you in turning and stopping.
  • Remind other workers not to gather near the truck while it's dumping its load.
  • Be careful when driving in traffic. It's easy to get distracted and lose focus, especially after a long shift.
  • If material is likely to flow irregularly, lessen the load at the top of the box to reduce the likelihood of a tipping accident.
  • Always check overhead for electrical wires that could contact the truck. The truck itself can act as a conductor and carry electrical current.
  • Be aware of areas where it may be unsafe to dump, such as uneven surfaces or fill that hasn't been properly compacted.

This list should give you a pretty thorough look at the safety basics for running a dump truck. Hopefully you took something away from it. Be safe out there.
